The month of May was an exciting and busy time for the Chelsea Area Historical Society and Museum. In addition to wonderfully successful events like the Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction and the first ever High Tea at the Museum, we had a great presentation at the Membership Meeting. On top of those events we had two groups of local Seniors – the retired variety and those about to graduate from Chelsea High School. And we also worked with the high school on a new program to have students conduct oral histories of past graduates and these histories will become part of the CAHS collections. Whew! Thanks to the great team of volunteers who make all this happen!!
Summer may see a slowdown in activity but not a lack of need for volunteers and so we are asking for your help. We appreciate that your time is precious but if you can just help for perhaps 2 or 3 hours just once this summer, YOU can make a difference! Many of these volunteer opportunities will require no experience, just a willingness to help out for a short time and meet new faces:
· Sound & Sights – returning tonight! We set up an information table at the corner of Main Street & Jackson to encourage visitors, provide membership forms and offer a few things from sale from the Museum Gift Shop. It is from 6:30 to 8:30 on a Thursday night – are you available just once – even for one of the two hours?
· Flower Planting – we are planning on taking a couple of hours this month to do some plantings around the outside of the museum and could use some green or semi-green thumbs.
· Docents (Museum Guides) – you DON’T have to be any kind of history expert, just someone to greet visitors. We have set up a mentor program so you will receive a one-time, one-on-one training session with another Docent performing their duties so you will be more than comfortable to perform this enjoyable function. Here too, just one three hour shift once a quarter will be a big help.
In addition to the museum being open Thursday nights this summer from 6:30 to 8:30, we will continue to be open Saturdays & Sundays noon to 3:00. In the fall we hit the ground running again with the September 11th Membership Meeting (7:00 at the Train Depot). We are also planning another High Tea this fall (date to be announced but with a sell-out the first time around remember to reserve quickly when we do announce it). And a couple of other activities in the works including the December 2nd Holiday Homes Tour. We already have 4 wonderful homes lined-up but are looking for a couple more, so if you might be interested let us know and we’ll be happy to answer your questions.
Folks – we really mean it – just a couple hours of your time once a quarter or so will really make a big difference in YOUR CAHS! To help out or if you have questions, please call or e-mail us (734-476-2010 or Staff@ChelseaHistory.org).
