We are going to do something unique and fun for our September 11, 2017 Membership Meeting. Wendy Chiodo, who spoke to CAHS last year about Historic Gardens, has graciously offered to give us a tour of the historic home and garden she and her husband own in Grass Lake. Since we are the Chelsea “Area” Historical Society we felt it would be appropriate to take a short drive to Grass Lake for this one of a kind experience.
Wendy’s property includes 2 houses built by Samuel Updyke, one an original log cabin and an 1870, 3000 sq. ft. Italianate that has been returned back to its original layout and included 5 bedrooms, a double parlor and a formal dining room. The gold filigree picture railings in the parlor, original faux wood painting, period wall paper remnants as well as the coal burning parlor stove are still intact today. The house was built without electricity, so the lamp shelves that were built into the walls remain today. Amazingly much of the house has been left as it was when it was built in the 1870’s.
Their 4 acre garden include the 1849 log cabin, as well as other historical elements such as the original 1883 Windmill. This trip will truly be a step back in time to enjoy what life used to be like in the 1800’s.
Please meet at Wendy’s home at 1612 Craft Road, Grass Lake for our next membership meeting which will start promptly at 6:30 PM on September 11, 2017. Hope to see you there! This event will happen rain or shine so bring an umbrella if necessary.
